Laboratory Data Management Specialist - Plant Science

Location: Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, USA

BASF - the Chemical Company - consolidated its plant biotechnology activities in BASF Plant Science in 1998. Today, about 800 employees are working to optimize crops for more efficient agriculture, renewable raw materials and healthier nutrition. We are currently looking for a Laboratory Data Management Specialist.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Primarily responsible for the content in the Operational Databases used for planning, tracking, and reporting of all research activities in Crop Pipelines Function
  • Assure content in the databases is complete, correct, current, and consistent
  • Interact closely with researchers, Laboratory and Greenhouse managers, and Platform Coordinators for data input
  • Track deliverables against budget and resources and report the data to the Local Function Head and Lab Managers
  • Collaborate closely with Information Technology (IT) & Bioinformatics colleagues in the development of new functionalities
  • Assist IT in gathering workflow requirements from scientists in the development of new applications
  • Test changes and updates in designated IT systems
  • Help in the creation and maintenance of application documentation as well as assist in the training of users

This position will be based in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina and may require travel to other BASF Plant Science locations

QUALIFICATIONS: - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

Required qualifications:

  • BS degree in Plant Science, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Information Technology, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Bioinformatics or related sciences with at least 7 years’ experience –OR-MS degree in Plant Science, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Information Technology, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Bioinformatics or related sciences with at least 4 years’ experience
  • At least 5 years of experience using LIMS system in a R&D laboratory
  • Demonstrated experience in data content management (e.g. LIMS, Excel, Access, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to understand the scientific content involved in plant biotechnology and effectively gather data required for user support activities
  • Demonstrated ability to translate plant science & research based requirements to IT technical specification documents
  • Strong interpersonal and written and oral communication skills
  • Strong computer skills with basic use of SQL and Oracle RDBMS
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience in developing and writing application user manuals and preparing user training documents

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated basic knowledge of software development methodology
  • Ability to speak and write in a foreign language (e.g. German, Spanish, Portuguese, French or Chinese)
