The plant biotechnology Innovation center of Bayer in Gent is part of Bayer CropScience NV in Diegem. The Gent site now has 350 employees and is the most important research and development center of the Seeds division of the Bayer group. In the Gent Innovation center, the innovation and commercialization processes of improved plant varieties are being streamlined by integrating plant biotech research and global business support functions – such as legal, intellectual property, quality analysis & control and regulatory.
Job description
The number one task as biometrician is to discover and implement superior applications of molecular technologies that will develop new varieties, enhance germplasm, improve trait introgression, and increase breeding efficiency while focusing on increasing genetic gain. You contribute as a team member to the development and implementation of molecular breeding processes providing statistical, quantitative genetics, coding and computing and mathematics expertise. Furthermore you perform experiment and breeding program design tasks, and relevant data analysis. You will also report findings and conclusions clearly so they can be easily understood by the involved stakeholders. Besides, you develop, test, and document new data analysis tools and algorithms for use in molecular breeding activities. Follow efficient programming strategies and ensure the integration of tools in the group software platform. Moreover, you train and support breeders in experimental design and data analysis activities. You will also contribute to building the internal critical mass on molecular breeding and quantitative genetics.
Your qualifications
- Ph.D. or Masters degree in statistics, quantitative genetics/biology, or a related field.
- Relevant working experience is an asset.
- Excellent knowledge of plant breeding.
- Expertise in statistical analysis software (R, Bayesian computing, etc.).
- Creative and innovative mindset.
- Good reporting and communication skills in English (working language).
- Team player with strong interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work in a multicultural environment.
