JOB DESCRIPTION:

BASF – the Chemical Company – consolidated its plant biotechnology activities in BASF Plant Science (GB) in 1998. Today, about 800 employees are working to optimize crops for more efficient agriculture, renewable raw materials and healthier nutrition.

The Crop Pipeline Technology Center within BASF Plant Science is seeking an experienced scientist with excellent research experience in plant biochemistry and related technologies.

The successful candidate will focus on developing methods to unravel gene expression and pathways in plant tissues. The candidate will also work towards elucidating agronomic phenotypes using novel tissue culture and transformation techniques and plant assays.

This position will require travel and work at various field stations throughout the year.

The position will interface with protein/biochemistry and transcription analysis teams. The development of these technologies will involve complying with corporate and governmental regulations and securing intellectual property.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop novel cell and tissue culture systems, include initiating and maintaining embryo, ovule and/or microspore cultures.
  • Develop and implement plant agronomic assays in the lab, GH and field.
  • Travel and moderate physical work at field sites throughout the year.
  • Develop project plans based on business strategy.
  • Review relevant publications and patent literature.
  • Design experiments and establish protocols.
  • Interpret and communicate results.
  • Work closely and effectively with other team members to achieve common goals.
  • Make team decisions on technical outcomes.

QUALIFICATIONS:

BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

Required:

  • PhD with 5 years • OR • MS with 7 years • OR • BS with 9 years of relevant experience in Plant Biology, Gene Expression, and Metabolic Pathways in plant tissues or Related Bioscience Fields.
  • Excellent technical skills in plant cell culture/transformation and general molecular biology.
  • Solid knowledge in molecular, cell and plant biology.
  • Agronomic experience with crop plants in the fields.
  • Self-starter with excellent interpersonal, analytical and communication skills.
  • Innovativeness and perseverance to work at bench to convert ideas to realities.

Preferred:

  • Experience in mutagenesis and phenotypic screens.
  • Working knowledge with plant anatomy & physiology, genetics, plant breeding, and biochemistry.
