Location: Lincoln, Nebraska, USA, Gatesleben, Germany or Milly la Foret, France

Job description

The primary responsibility of this role, as Head of Wheat Discovery Breeding, is to direct the crop molecular breeding and scientific discovery programs by managing a global operation team of scientific experts and agronomists in Europe and North America. The director implements innovative molecular marker-based genotyping and high-throughput phenotyping processes within the global crop breeding organization to develop competitive plant varieties and hybrids, lead native trait discovery, enhance the germplasm base, and improve cost efficiency. The Head of crop Discovery Breeding develops innovative seeds and traits products for the market place in support of establishment and growth of BCS wheat crop business.

The incumbent will:

  • Lead development and implementation of the global Wheat Discovery Breeding strategies by optimizing breeding processes in collaboration with other B&TD functions and Trait Research;
  • Lead native trait explorations in collaboration with other B&TD groups and delivering validated molecular markers for applications in Wheat Breeding. Strategic role together with the Head, Wheat Breeding in defining native traits targets by scouting publications, characterizing the germplasm base and proposing collaborations;
  • Implement innovative molecular marker-based processes in collaboration with other B&TD group, including Wheat Breeding and, where applicable, Trait Development. Breeding procedures include MABC for trait introgression, MAS, and genomic selection;
  • Acquire new wheat germplasm accessions. Organize germplasm profiling and characterization and lead genetic base enhancements in collaboration with other B&TD groups;
  • Directly manage the global wheat discovery breeding team of scientific experts and agronomists. The global team conducts field experiments involving phenotyping, genotyping and analysis for native trait discovery, trait validation and methods development;
  • Provide coaching to breeders to ensure successful adoption of molecular marker-based technologies and innovative processes;
  • Contribute to the B&TD organization’s effectiveness and efficiency by active participation in the Expert Crop Team and in the Discovery Breeding community across all crops;
  • Adhere to HR, regulatory, stewardship and policies, legal compliance, and QMS and QHSE programs.

Your qualifications

The selected candidate is required to possess the following:

  • Ph.D. in plant breeding, agronomy, genetics or related disciplines, or equivalent;
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in relevant fields: plant breeding and variety development with at least 5 years’ experience in the crop business with demonstrated success in breeding process improvement, or equivalent;
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge in statistics, quantitative genetics and plant breeding;
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge in one or more of the following: plant molecular biology, crop analytical methods, high-throughput phenotyping technologies and plant physiology applications;
  • Capability to develop new concepts applications. Ability to plan present and future needs through critical and strategic thinking;
  • Training and experience in effectively leading teams, including hiring, staff coaching, and developing global teams;
  • Experience organizing and managing complex projects, especially in setting and meeting project timelines, including budget planning and managing expenses;
  • Good communication skills, proficient in English.
