Position description summary:

The candidate will lead the determinate fresh market tomato breeding program based in Davis, CA. Target market for this program includes Mexico saladette, Western USA and Middle East round markets.

The primary responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop an expert understanding of your customers as well as an expert knowledge of your crop, breeding populations and associated methods to deliver commercial success. 

  • Define the breeding strategy and develop a genetic improvement program to create new and original varieties in line with market needs.

  • Efficiently, coordinate the implementation of programs through a network of breeding stations and screening sites, and leveraging current research technologies.

  • Undertake objective phenotyping of genetic material placed in the different targeted markets and analyze results using statistical tools.

  • Ensure the provision of uniform and stable basic seed lots of inbred lines that have met the threshold of being able to produce the hybrid or OP line reliably, consistently and cost effectively. 

  • Maximize the use of all resources allocated to the breeding program(s).

  • Remain abreast of scientific and technological developments in field of expertise, and monitor the position of competitor’s products.

  • Extensive travel within the United States, as well as abroad, required.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Agronomic or Biological science with specialization in Plant Breeding or Genetics; PhD desired.

  • Minimum 4 to 5 years’ experience breeding or experimental breeding program management (Level of Breeder will be based on qualifications of the most suitable candidate).

  • Must be proficient in English; proficiency in French and/or Spanish a plus.

Skills required:

  • Team player with strong communication skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and to interact with multicultural peer network.

  • Ability to detect subtle differences between plants and to design a breeding scheme based on multiple and complex information sources, bringing new ideas to the table.
