Quantitative Geneticist / Biostatistician Project Leader
Location: Clermont-Ferrand, France Limagrain is an international agriculture co-operative group specialized in field seeds, vegetable seeds and cereal products. Founded and managed by French farmers the group is the largest European seed company and 4th largest seed company in the world. Within the Field Crop Research organisation we are seeking a quantitative geneticist, to be part of the Biostatistics team. This permanent position will be based at Limagrain worldwide headquarters in Clermont-Ferrand, France.
Mission :
Limagrain is seeking a quantitative geneticist to work in the biostatistics team, within the Field Crop Research organisation. The biostatistics team is responsible for developing and implementing advanced analytical tools and methods for use in applied breeding programs. Activities will be focused on the development and improvement of breeding decision support tools, providing methodological support to our breeding teams and leading projects in breeding program optimization. The successful candidate will be expected to coordinate and collaborate closely with breeding teams across the Field Crop Research organization worldwide.
Responsibilities will include:
- Analysis of large (phenotypic, marker and pedigree) data sets for method and tool development, develop new or adapt existing methods for marker-assisted breeding activities.
- Use theory, simulation, and phenotypic and genomic data collected from active breeding programs to lead investigations for performance predictions applied to breeding decisions and breeding program optimization.
- Make recommendations and train scientists on best practice for the effective use of marker-based methods.
- Define and manage the introduction of new tools and methods, ensuring that appropriate improvements and updates to software and analysis methods are implemented in a timely manner and assisting in the end-user support.
- Contribution to Research projects in collaboration with external partners
Profile :
- A PhD (or Master Degree + equivalent experience) in statistics, quantitative genetics, plant breeding, animal breeding, applied statistics, or a related field is required.
Required skills:
- Knowledge of mixed model BLUP methodology and proficiency in related statistical softwares is required.
- Strong background applying and interpreting statistical analysis of large, unbalanced datasets for genetic signal detection.
- Understanding and experience using statistical/mathematical softwares (R/S+, SAS, Matlab, …).
- Knowledge of the technical aspects of commercial plant breeding programs is a plus but not a requirement.
- Experience with Fortran or other similar compiled programming language is a plus.
- The position requires the ability to take research projects from conception to completion, including conducting statistical analyses, interpretation of research results and project management.
- Demonstrated ability to work in dynamic scientific teams, strong communication skills, and demonstrated ability to contribute to complex research projects performed under tight deadlines
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, good organizational skills and attention to detail are important in this position.
- Given the international exposure in our field seed research fluent English is mandatory.
- This position involves some travel.
