Scientist II - Breeder
Location: Idalou, Texas, USA YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary responsibility of this role, as Scientist II - Breeder, is to develop break through cotton varieties for the West Texas producer for Bayer CropScience. The incumbent will develop a clear vision and build a cotton abiotic stress breeding program with input from the West Texas cotton team and business.
The incumbent will:
- Develop and execute a strategy for the successful, timely, and cost-effective development and evaluation of germplasm for improved drought tolerance. This includes but not limited to nursery planning, selection, team interaction and development, environment control, co-operator interaction, supervision of seed packaging, nursery and plot establishment, weed control, data collection, harvesting, quality testing, data entry, database management, and statistical analysis;
- Manage and lead the nursery staff in terms of budgets and resource allocation in a manner that builds a strong functional team;
- Manage projects within budget and goals;
- Contribute to the development of and facilitate the realization of the overall seed business strategy as it relates to breeding, trait development, and new product pipeline;
- Responsible for technical aspects of new cultivar development needed for realizing the strategic plan;
- Effectively documents and communicate research/program findings and achievement of program goals;
- Provide input for the annual budget on resource needs, especially consumables and equipment;
- Identify capital needs for the site, facilities, and equipment associated with the program;
- Supervise 2-4 direct reports;
- Timely and clear communication of workload, operations, and anticipated or occurring technical problems;
- Efficiency and quality of the program is delivered in terms of strict adherence to exceptional breeding procedures, accurate data collection and clear communication of performance data;
- Full integration of molecular and phenotypic tools;
- Respect and strict adherence to Regulatory, QHSE and Stewardship policies;
- Strict adherence to Capital and Annual Operating Plan for the program;
- Effectively manage program personnel with valid Performance Management objectives.
WHO YOU ARE
The selected candidate is required to possess the following:
- B. S. (with 8 years of experience), M. S. (with 6 years of experience) or Ph.D. (with 2 years of experience) degree in agronomy, crop physiology, plant breeding, biology or related field;
- Market oriented with knowledge of the entire system of variety development from hybridization to inbred lines is essential;
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail;
- Working knowledge of personal computers and Microsoft Office software;
- People and resource management skills that include recruitment and development of staff;
- Strong analytical and creative skills are needed to analyse data, prepare management updates and crop site literature for visits of breeders, growers and others;
- Critical and logical thinking ability to plan present and future needs;
- Strong background in cotton agronomy and physiology, statistical design and analysis, laboratory seed processing techniques, and experimental and yield trial management;
- Working knowledge of molecular markers;
- Knowledge of statistics and current quantitative plant breeding methodology.
