Viticulturist 1, Grape Breeding and Genetics

Location: Modesto, California, USA

UMMARY
Participates in laboratory and field activities related to the development and commercialization of improved wine grape varieties. Provides technical support to all phases of the plant breeding program including pollen collection and hybridization, plant phenotyping, data management and analysis, seed collection and conditioning, plant propagation, planting and maintenance of seedling and germplasm collections and the application of Marker Assisted Selection and other methodologies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Conducts research, oversees data collection, analysis and interpretation of results.
  • Prepares technical reports in a format appropriate for customer needs.
  • Performs pollen collection and hybridization, plant phenotyping, data management and analysis, seed collection and conditioning, plant propagation, planting and maintenance of seedling and germplasm collections and the application of Marker Assisted Selection and other methodologies.
  • Collects phenotying data on basic vine performance parameters including yield components, vegetative growth and development, flavor and fruit quality attributes, and wine composition and quality. 
  • Organizes and coordinates data entry, storage and analyses, ensuring data accuracy and security. 
  • Participates in the development and maintenance of relevant databases for the breeding and genomics research program.     
  • Participates on teams that may be cross-functional and interdepartmental to accomplish project goals.
  • Maintains laboratory research notebooks and breeding records to Gallo regulatory and legal standards.
  • Maintains a safe laboratory work environment and conducts work in accordance with good laboratory practices and safety guidelines.
  • Ensures the protection of company intellectual property.
  • Continuously improves and develops technical skills. 
  • Stays current with the latest scientific literature and takes initiative to suggest ideas that potentially could contribute to improved research and commercial outcomes. 
  • Must maintain satisfactory attendance, to include timeliness.
  • Responsible for understanding and complying with applicable quality, environmental and safety regulatory considerations.  If accountable for the work of others, responsible for ensuring their understanding and compliance.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science degree in a natural sciences or agriculture.
  • Required to possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Required to travel to vineyard locations throughout California with occasional overnight travel.
  • Required to lift and move up to 40 pounds.
  • Required to possess color vision.
  • High school diploma or GED.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Viticulture, Biology, Plant Science or Agriculture plus 2 years of field research or vineyard management experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Master’s degree in Viticulture or Plant Science.
  • Documented expertise and experience in grape breeding is highly desirable, as is technical expertise in phenotyping, data management and Marker Assisted Selection methodologies.  
  • Skilled in the use of MS Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint at an intermediate or higher level.
  • Experience in database management, including the use of relevant software commonly utilized for plant breeding data storage and analyses. 
  • Experience comprehending and applying principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra, and advanced statistical theory. 
  • Experience with applying the principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. 
  • Experience dealing with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations and graphs) and abstract and concrete variables.
  • Experience working independently, as well as in effectively interfacing with cross-functional technical teams.
  • Demonstrates positive and cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors.

While performing the duties of this job, employees are occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals.

The employee will frequently work outdoors, in an agricultural environment.   She/he must be able to work under the standard environment encountered in a vineyard including cold (winter) and hot, dusty (summer) conditions.       

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
