Field Operations Coordinator

Location: Gilroy, California, USA

Shamrock Seed Company, a Vilmorin company, has an immediate opening for a Field Operations Coordinator to assume the responsibility for all aspects of plant culture related to field growing and vegetable crops.

Applicants must have a B.S. or higher in Agriculture (Agronomy, Horticulture) or related field. Experience in lettuce, carrots, cauliflower and broccoli crops helpful (but not required). Must be willing to work in crop fields and greenhouses and travel as needed domestically and internationally. Computer literacy (database and spreadsheet management, word processing) necessary.

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Oversee field grown research & breeding programs to the expectations of the breeding and research staff
  • Develop crop specific fertilizer and irrigation protocols that maximize the potential of the breeding programs
  • Supervise seasonal and contract labor staff to ensure the day to day needs of the station are being met
  • Apply labeled pesticides to control weeds, insect pests, and diseases
  • Oversee and perform routine farm and field equipment maintenance and repair
  • Utilization of isolation cages
  • Soil preparation, bed preparation and cultivation
  • Conduct periodic crop walks with the US Research Operations Manager to review crop progress and develop plans to address any variances or opportunities
  • Prepare monthly written progress reports for the US Research Operations Manager
  • Assist in the seasonal development of farm layout and planting plans
  • Assist in the development of annual operating budgets and capital investment plans
  • Work with the US Research Operations Manager to develop and implement station and regional improvement initiatives
  • Cross train with Greenhouse Supervisor and assist as needed

Requirements:

  • B.S. or higher in Agriculture (Agronomy, Horticulture) or related field
  • 2 to 5 years experience in vegetable farming
  • 2 to 5 years experience in irrigation techniques and planning
  • 2 to 5 years experience supervising crews
  • 2 to 5 years experience operating farm equipment, including tractors
  • Pesticide Applicator’s License, or PCA license or the ability to obtain one
  • Valid Driver’s License required
