Plant Breeder, Tomato

Location: Nunhem, The Netherlands

In the division Research & Development the department Breeding is responsible for the continuous improvement of our competitive assortment of high quality vegetable varieties for the professional grower. To lead our Tomato Fresh Market breeding program we are looking for ambitious and creative candidates for the fulltime position of Plant Breeder Tomato

To be located at our site in Haelen, the Netherlands

Your mission as Plant Breeder Tomato

You will be responsible for the development of commercially successful tomato varieties for high-tech GH market in EMEA and present the technological image of Nunhems by designing and executing a process of continuous variety creation and development.

Your tasks & responsibilities :

  • Execute and constantly optimize the Tomato Fresh breeding program through use of latest methodologies and; technologies, and within the frame work of available resources and budget;
  • Participate and contribute to research projects, which are relevant for the breeding program and/or target markets;
  • Translate market requirements and needs into breeding targets and novel competitive products;
  • Manage, coach and support the direct Tomato Breeding team which consists of an assistant breeder and breeding; technician as also a Farm team (approx. 30 employees).

You are a professional with :

  • PhD (or Master) in plant breeding or genetics;
  • At least 5 years of experience in plant breeding (Must), preferably in Tomato;
  • In depth working knowledge of horticulture, agronomy, genetics, pathology, statistics, physiology and molecular genetics;
  • Expertise in population development, planning of phenotypic designs and evaluations as well as data management and analysis;
  • High level of English language verbal and written (Must);
  • Experience in guiding and coaching a team;
  • Good connectivity for marketing aspects and ability to translate customers problems into novel genetic solutions;
  • Good Communication skills, ability to communicate and collaborate with colleagues of all levels;
  • Willing to travel frequently national and international (10% within Europe).
