Pre Breeder

Location: Acampo, California, USA

The individual selected for this position will install in a structured way special trait(s) or pre-breeding activities. These activities will support mainstream breeding in three ways: *Develop half material(s) and gene pools with specific traits, ready to be used in the breeding programs. *Develop the respective breeding populations to be used in breeding for developing specific markers or other molecular tools. *Develop genetic knowledge to improve selection efficiency.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop genetic material enhancing the germplasm of one or several crops.
  • Support breeding teams on the global level.
  • Translate market requirements and future needs observed by the breeder and by sales and marketing into new traits in order to determine pre-breeding goals.
  • Generate knowledge on genetics to increase efficiency in breeding.
  • Use internal and external contacts, literature, conferences etc. to increase breeding knowledge.
  • Inform the Global Head of Trait Development regarding external research projects that could be beneficial for the breeding programs in line with the crop specific breeding strategy
  • Act as a contact person for research cooperation with 3rd parties.
  • Manage the execution and administration of in kind contributions to research cooperation with 3rd parties.
  • Manage, support and direct the pre-breeding team.
  • Manage in cooperation with the Head of Breeding and HR, the personnel flow within the breeding team, including: appraisal, training and development and career planning.

Required Skills:

  • Able to manage several projects at the same time.

  • Good communicative and interpersonal skills required
  • Must be a team player.
  • Client focused and result driven.
  • Must understand marketing aspects related to downstream customers.
  • Able to translate customers problems into novel genetic solutions.
  • ust be willing to travel.

Required Experience:

  • PhD in plant breeding or genetics preferred with 5+ years of experience in plant breeding.
  • In depth working knowledge of horticulture, agronomy, genetics, pathology, statistics, physiology, molecular genetics and cell biology.
