Main goal
The Research Associate will be the Immokalee operations liaison for sweet corn nurseries and trials in Florida and Georgia as well as supporting tomato breeding efforts in Florida. Support for sweet corn and tomato breeding will include nursery layout, planting, tissue sampling, scouting, pollination, harvest, seed drying and shipping. Also included will be sweet corn and tomato hybrid screening trial layout, planting, scouting and evaluation. Some overnight travel will be required to support nurseries and trials in other regions.
Job description
- Managing the sweet corn nursery at Immokalee: monitoring nursery status, communication of nursery needs to station management, coordination with sweet corn breeding team in Sun Prairie. This includes planting, taking stand counts, tissue sampling, disease inoculation, pollination, scouting for disease and insects, harvest, monitoring the drying of the harvested ears and shipping dry seed lots to Sun Prairie when ready.
- Managing the sweet corn trials in the Belle Glade, FL area and in Georgia near Bainbridge. This includes planting, scouting, monitoring maturity and evaluation. Some overnight travel will be necessary.
- With technical direction from the onsite tomato breeder, the ability to manage day to day tasks of the tomato breeding program including onsite nursery, onsite and offsite breeder hybrid trials, and greenhouse hybrid seed production.
- Data management: data entry, preparation of planting lists, stakes, row tags, field maps, and data summaries.
- Travel to the Midwest and Northeast US will be necessary during the summer months to assist with sweet corn nursery and trial work in those areas.
- This is a hands-on position that will entail working alone, as well as managing small crews while working along with them.
Supervisory responsibilities
Manage, train and supervise small work crews of 5 to 15 people in sweet corn nursery and trial planting and in nursery pollination work.
Qualifications:
- B.S. Degree in an agricultural related field
- Agricultural experience
- Excellent organizational skills
- Good computer skills (Access and Excel)
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team
- English required, ability to communicate in Spanish strongly recommended
