Plant Breeder

Location: Wauseon, Ohio, USA

Opportunity

Rupp Seeds has an immediate opening for a full-time Plant Breeder at our research farm in Northwest Ohio.

Our company has active breeding projects in cucurbits, specifically pumpkin, winter squash and gourds, as well as food grade soybeans and colored corn, and we are looking to expand the scope of our breeding efforts.

The successful plant breeder will develop and improve varieties that meet the agronomic and marketplace needs of our commercial grower and gardening customers.

Ideal candidates will have experience in plant breeding, particularly in vegetable crops, and will know how to set up a breeding program in a specific crop and be able to carry out the various details of the programs yearly cycle and activities. Prior experience in breeding cucurbits is considered a plus for candidates, along with experience or knowledge in commercial vegetable production and an understanding of farming practices. Applicants must be friendly, have excellent people skills, good listening skills, a desire to be helpful, and an ability to work in a seasonal, fast paced environment. They must be able to touch type and use a personal computer, software and the internet.

Responsibilities

  • Design and manage summer, contra-season and greenhouse breeding nurseries.
  • Manage breeding program and activities including cultivar population development, selection, screening, advancement, hybridization and evaluation.
  • Manage nursery activities including setup, packeting, planting, thinning, pollinating, data capture, note taking and harvesting.
  • Oversee the work of seasonal employees to ensure tasks are completed accurately and on time.
  • Assist and support product development in conducting variety trials and data collection.
  • Assist and support production in multiplying parent seed and commercial seed lots.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree or PhD in genetics, plant breeding or related field.
  • Working knowledge of traditional breeding methods and applications.
  • Proficient in the use of Windows PCs, Microsoft Office and other Windows-based software.

Working Conditions

  • Will need to work extended hours or weekends at times to complete the work required.
  • Will regularly be moving inside and outside, working in changing conditions and varying temperatures.
  • Need to be able to travel on occasion.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to read, count and write to accurately complete notes and documentation.
  • Able to walk, bend and lift the weight of a typical large pumpkin.
  • Able to sit at a computer for long periods of time.
  • Able to freely access all areas and locations of the business.

Compensation

  • Salary plus profit sharing.
