Principal Plant Breeder

Location: Rochelle, Illinois, USA

Del Monte has been a national leader in green bean variety development and production for over 80 years and is heavily invested in building proprietary varieties that out-compete in the field, in the processing plant and on the plate. The role of the plant breeder is to speed that trajectory of success by breeding new varieties for production in the Midwest and Texas.

The breeder is responsible for deciding on crosses to be made, creating the plot books, selecting new lines, conducting contra-season increases, managing breeder stock seed and advising Operations on best practices. The breeder is a critical part of a cross functional ag team that must work closely together to advance to Company's goals. In addition, the breeder must be well connected with the breeding community and remain current on advances in the science.

  • Conduct Del Monte's bean variety-development programs to provide the Company with proprietary varieties possessing the agronomic traits and canned quality characteristics defined as important by Production, Quality and Marketing.
  • Work with the Del Monte research agronomists and technicians to evaluate the suitability of proprietary and non-proprietary bean varieties. Routinely connect with Del Monte Ag Product Manager and field staff to better understand the full range of commercial traits required and gain feedback from commercial trials.
  • Maintain and expand development of computer programs used in the management of the Del Monte bean breeding programs.
  • Stock Seed management -- maintain on-hand an adequate supply of Breeder Seed for all production varieties and provide support to Seed Department as requested.
  • Keep abreast of new developments in the field of scientific research and keep management informed in order to take advantage of opportunities in equipment advances, biological literature and biotechnology.
  • Serve as an integral member of the Agricultural Team, from variety development through evaluation to seed production.
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • 3-5 years working as a plant breeder.
  • Ph.D. in plant breeding or genetics or Master’s degree with extensive bean breeding experience.
  • Strong background in plant breeding, genetics, field plot technique and statistical analysis, and molecular marker applications in plant breeding.
  • Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills for a range of backgrounds and interests.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the U.S. during the production season.
  • Experience with data management and statistical analysis software.
  • Ability to work in a team-based environment with multidisciplinary teams.

WE OFFER:

  • Competitive salary
  • Comprehensive benefits package including Medical, Dental, Vision,
  • 401(k) and Pension Plan
