Research Associate

Research Associate– Req #: 0011Y0

Monsanto is seeking a Research Associate based in Felda, Florida to support our cucumber breeding research program.

Duties will include organizing and conducting plant breeding research and related experiments with minimal supervision, in accordance with established procedures to support Breeders and Scientists in developing new cultivars. Provide overall support to research efforts in field and greenhouse and laboratory.

Key Business Accountabilities:

  • Hire and manage technical, seasonal and/or contract laborers to manage weeds, pollinate, plant, harvest, sample and data collection.
  • Support the Breeder in implementing all aspects of the breeding program including crossing blocks, breeding nurseries, hybrid trials and marker-assisted selection projects
  • Monitor all cultural practices in field and GH
  • Collect data for yield, disease, plant and fruit and enter data into breeding database
  • Organize, package and send seed shipments with appropriate documentation and phytosanitary paperwork
  • Support off station trials as needed
  • Update, analyze and assist in management of breeding records in database
  • Coordinate projects with other breeding and support programs
  • Assist in planning, budgeting and forecasting resource needs
  • Perform safety inspections and assist in providing safety training and guidance to field personnel

Required Education/Skills:

  • B.S. degree in Plant Science, Agriculture, Horticulture or related field of study
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in related field
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Excel, Access)
  • Comfortable with field and greenhouse work, sometimes under extreme weather conditions
  • Very organized with a strong attention to detail

Desired Education/Skills:

  • M.S. degree in Plant Science, Agriculture, Horticulture or related field of study
  • Bilingual Spanish/English
  • Ability to multi-task in both field/greenhouse
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong organizational and record keeping skills
  • Three or more years of work experience within a plant breeding/research environment
  • Familiarity with breeding and research methodologies
  • Prior experience working in agriculture
