Breeding Coordinator, Pepper

Location: San Juan Bautista, California, USA

POSITION IN THE ORGANIZATION: Reports to the Sr. Breeder, Pepper

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: Ensuring optimum coordination and administration of research trials.

Summary of responsibilities:

  1. 1. Administration of research seed inventory.
  2. 2. Maintain data in breeding database.
  3. 3. Support Breeders in trial evaluations.
  4. . Labor management.

Brief description of responsibilities and duties:

1. Administration of research seed inventory

  • Maintain accurate and current inventory of research seed in the seed vault including marker and disease testing of selected plants.
  • Oversee the assembly of research packets for trial programs and ensure proper distribution, under the direction of the respective Breeders.
  • Manage the preparation of trial packets for the 1st and 2nd screening programs and ensure proper distribution as needed.
  • Administer the collection and distribution of seed to the Production Department as needed, ensuring the appropriate documentation is included.
  • Lead and administer seed distribution to Phytopathology for appropriate testing.

2. Maintain data in breeding database

  • Ensure that relevant breeding information is maintained in the applicable database/software. Information includes but is not limited to results of physical, marker and disease tests.
  • Keep knowledge on breeding database systems current, through ongoing training.
  • Train and transfer knowledge of using database systems and data collection to technicians.

3. Support Breeders in trial evaluations

  • In collaboration with the respective Breeders, assist in inspecting and evaluating trial programs of both on station and off station trials.
  • Perform evaluations of 2nd screenings with respective Crop Specialist as needed.
  • Estimate needed labor resources for sowing, thinning and harvest of trial programs and coordinate with facility management.

4. Labor management

  • Plan and organize the work of the Technicians and contract labor as it relates to the respective crop.
  • Proactively look for ways to bring efficiencies in managing labor resources, resulting in cost containment.
  • Review and approve timecards of Technicians in a timely manner using the HR timekeeping system, as delegated by and under the responsibility of the Sr. Breeder.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Profile:

Education / Knowledge

Education or experience at minimum Bachelor’s level supplemented with additional training courses.

Skills

Ability to compile and analyze data. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Professional, assertive and clear communication skills (verbal and written).

A detail oriented team player.
Shows personal initiative, is flexible and pragmatic, and able to portray and promote a positive image of the company’s vision, mission and values.
Must maintain high confidentiality.

Independence

Performs tasks independently, under the responsibility of the Sr. Pepper Breeder.

Contacts

Maintains contacts, both internal and external.

Leadership

Assigns and leads tasks of the Technicians and contract labor.

Working Conditions

Regularly works under pressure and frequently uses a computer screen. Works under varying climate conditions and is exposed to outside working conditions.

Must possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
