Manager of Agronomy Services (Mid-Western, US)

Description

Thurston Genetics (TG) is an arm of BASF Plant Science LP that specializes in licensing proprietary corn germplasm to retail seed companies. TG has developed an extensive research testing program to measure performance of its products and publish on an annual basis a Product Profile Book that TG Sales Managers use for sales and marketing efforts. TG represents approximately 20 Originators (corn breeding programs) globally with exclusive rights to license out their germplasm. TG has also entered into contractual relationships with biotech trait providers to incorporate their traits into the germplasm TG represents.

This role is part of a sixteen person sales and agronomy team that has a significant seed corn market share in North America. This role is critical to TG as it has insight into all functions, will drive key operation areas and interacts directly with key customers.

The Manager of Agronomy Services (MAS) is responsible for overseeing all the agronomic needs of products and services for the company. The MAS works with Executive Management to grow the company through the use of Origination, field testing, seed production and stewardship. Using an active and practical approach, the MAS will direct employees in field trials, agronomic studies, field production and data collection to attain the company’s strategic goals established in the company’s strategic plan.

Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Evaluate all inbred and hybrid products prior to release to customers, for assurance of required quality and performance criteria.
  • Create and manage expense budget related to this role including external research, third party contracting, production, and seed stewardship.
  • Coordinate testing programs and agronomic studies.
  • Direct and manage all summer and winter production activities for inbreds and hybrids.
  • Work with all Regional Sales Managers in data presentation, information of inbred/hybrid characteristics and assist in sales presentations.
  • Work with Originators to solicit TG’s identified needs for new inbreds and hybrids.
  • Participate on Product Release Team in determining commercial launch of products, needs assessment and customer allocations.
  • Direct supervision of the Data Specialist, Materials Coordinator and all seasonal help related to the role.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelors, or higher level, degree in a related field.
  • Minimum of 15 years’ experience in agronomy.

Preferred:

  • Minimum of 15 years’ experience in seed corn activities including corn genetics, biotech traits, agronomy.
  • Experience collaborating with agricultural sales, marketing, and/or technical services.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in seed production, field testing, nurseries, and agronomic studies.
