Product Selection Lead (Easter Shipper Sweet Corn & Garden Bean)

Role Purpose

  • Manage the process of external pre-commercial variety trialing for shipper sweet corn and fresh market garden beans in the eastern U.S. Conduct field trials of experimental and pre-commercial varieties to determine their market acceptability and to deliver well thought out and data driven variety recommendations.  Also, take part in special projects as needed. 

Accountabilities

  • Plan and execute a series of field trials for promising new varieties in the assigned species within a cropping cycle. Properly placed trials in commercial settings with accurate trait data collection and data analysis are the basis for recommendations for variety advancement or discard at the conclusion of the trial cycle.
  • Regular communication of trial results and market changes are required to keep stakeholders in sales, marketing and research up-to-date.  
  • The primary testing region includes Florida, Georgia and Tennessee. With some limited opportunities in the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
  • Identify and propose appropriate market slotting for new varieties. 
  • Provide technical support for these same species to external and internal customers. 
  • Additional special projects with these same species may also be required.

Qualifications

Critical knowledge
  • Bachelor’s degree in agricultural related field
  • Knowledge of basic experimental design for effective trial layout
  • Market knowledge related to assigned crops

Critical experience

  • Two or more years experience in the vegetable industry with the emphasis on field trial work

Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills required
  • Ability to measure or rate differences consistently  and accurately among plots for specified traits
  • Ability to effectively analyze and summarize data
  • Ability to effectively communicate results and recommendation to internal sales people, dealers, and growers at meetings, field trials  and field day events
  • Strong interest in hands-on experimental field trial work
  • Desire to maintain a highly safe work environment

Additional information 

  • A minimum of two years in current position is required (requirement for internal applicants only)
  • All applicants must be eligible to work in the US.
  • Physical demands of the essential functions:
  • Ability to lift objects up to 40 lbs.
  •  Working conditions while performing essential functions:
  • Conditions are often dirty, dusty, and hot in combination with noisy equipment.  Potential allergens-pollen, fungal spores, chemical pesticides in field or greenhouse.  Exposure to high and low temperatures, sun, rain, and dust.  Significant domestic travel throughout the key markets is required.
