For our location in Hadmersleben we are looking at the earliest for an
Hybrid Wheat Breeder (m/f)
Responsibilities:
- Develops subsequent breeding projects leading to the creation of hybrid wheat varieties combining low/acceptable COG and high field performance
- Develops hybrid wheat breeding strategy based on heterotic pool development and focused on decreasing COG and increasing hybrid performance
- Designs and drives heterosis exploration experiments by testing various gene pools adapted to EUC in hybrid wheat combinations, especially during the first years of the program
- Drives wheat breeding capabilities development plan (for him- / herself and reporting staff)
- Manages efficiently the program resources accordingly to its objectives
- Provides elite males from EUC program to CIS, COZ and TW hybrid wheat breeding programs
- Develops formal links with other EAME wheat breeding programs, to fish new genetic variability as a source of new traits or hybrid parents
- Provides technical expertise and insights in negotiations with Seed technology partners
- Leverages internal as well as external R & D capabilities to update his / her breeding program and strategy to the newest and most efficient technical innovations.
- Develops and updates growth plans for hybrid wheat breeding in EUC including internal & external interfaces, resourcing needs, key capabilities, expected deliverables
- Ensures smooth communication of all relevant data to product development and production and supply functions for efficient hybrid wheat promotion processes, and provides expertise for development of ICS with new hybrids.
- Gains approvals for the plan and ensures effective implementation by appropriate hiring and investment actions
- Aligns with global cereals growth strategy.
Requirements:
- MSc or PhD in plant breeding and genetics
- At least 5 to 10 years of work experience as a breeding research scientist in reputed agricultural university or private organization. Can be wheat/barley or any hybrid crop. Multi-zonal university / private organizations experience is preferred
- Proven track record of selection and release of varieties which had commercial success, in wheat, or other crops
- International working experience will be a strong plus
- Presented and published research papers would be a good plus
- Good knowledge of farm production systems in EUC
- Extensive knowledge of existing cereal varieties in EUC
- Extensive knowledge and experience of using modern breeding technologies and strategies (DH, markers, hybrid systems)
- Knowledge and contacts within wheat seeds related government organizations will be a good plus
- Very strong drive to breed good varieties and get them to the farmers
- Likes field work, strong commitment to work long hours in the field observing wheat plants
- Open-minded and self-challenging working attitude
- Excellent communication skills, for both internal stakeholder management and discussions with external partners
- Proficient communication skills in written and spoken English
- Good level in written and spoken German
- Flexibility to travel and work away from home base
