Research Agronomist, Sweet Corn

Location: Rochelle, Illinois, USA

POSITION FUNCTION & SCOPE:

Sweet corn has been a very important crop for Del Monte and the continuous introduction of new improved super sweet hybrids has been a key element of our success. The role of the sweet corn agronomist will be to speed the trajectory of that success through scientifically sound evaluation of new hybrids. The Agronomist will work closely with the product manager and outside company suppliers in obtaining seed for, planning, and executing research trials. Existing Del Monte Inbred lines will be maintained and supplied to outside companies producing cooperative hybrids.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan and conduct sweet corn variety evaluations for Del Monte at the Mendota Ag research Station.
  • Work with product manager, other agronomists, and farm superintendents on planting and evaluation of trials in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Washington.
  • Schedule experiments and plan for the necessary plot space, supplies, and seasonal labor.
  • Work closely with Pea Agronomist in managing research station.
  • Conduct or assist with additional non-varietal agronomic trials to provide useful ad hoc services to Operations.
  • Interact with breeders and product managers from outside companies to maximize delivery of their services to Del Monte.
  • Analyze and report research results.
  • Interact with University research cooperators to support their sweet corn research.
  • Attend annual International Sweet Corn Development Association meeting and other relevant meetings.
  • Conduct in-season field presentations of varieties for internal customers.
  • Manage the canning of research varieties in an Ag research cannery.
  • Help conduct canned sample evaluations.
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MS in Horticulture or Agronomy required.
  • 1-3 years working in field research.
  • Effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills for a range of backgrounds and interests.
  • Knowledge of statistics as applied to field plot research.
  • Willingness to travel to Del Monte sweet corn production area during the production season.
