Foundation Seed Crop Specialist

Location: Payette, Idaho, USA

Monsanto Vegetable Seeds has an opening for a Foundation Seed (FS) Crop Specialist in Payette, Idaho. This position is responsible for reliable and timely supply of Foundation Seed that is of the highest genetic purity and physical condition. The incumbent will provide a service of seed supply and information to internal customers.

Responsibilities include:

  • Oversee a regional Foundation Seed maintenance program for assigned crop(s)
  • Maintain accurate records of FS increases including inventory, purity, and disease testing for assigned crops
  • Work with Research staff and Crop Teams for technical support and advancement of new parent lines
  • Interact with Supply Team and Quality Assurance departments to be aware of inventory position and quality of seed being used
  • Ensure that FS increases remain genetically pure while increasing enough seed to meet customer needs
  • Oversee operations including but not limited to seed preparation, seed sowing, rogueing, harvesting, conditioning, seed storage and shipments
  • Travel to off site locations for increases, purity growout’s and meetings
  • Work with Farm Managers, Site Managers, Production Manager and Field Representatives and/or Breeding Team to accomplish seed increases
  • Evaluate new parental lines from Breeders to ensure lines are genetically fixed
  • Ensure seed produced meets quality specifications
  • Communicate seed quantity, quality and descriptive characteristics with Breeders, Scientists, Supply Team, Crop Teams, Product Managers and/or Technology Development
  • Manage all aspects of safety and compliance or other supporting activities

Required Skills:

  • Minimum of a B.S. in a scientific discipline plus four years relevant experience or M.S. in a scientific discipline plus two years relevant experience
  • Experience and/or coursework in genetics is desirable
  • Ability to supervise large labor crews
  • Detail oriented, good organizational, communication and human relation skills
  • Ability to interact cross-functionally with various internal departments and external agencies to ensure Monsanto ESH and compliance requirements are met
  • Excellent communication skills including the capability to clearly present information as well as the ability to communicate in a multi-national and cultural organization as an individual or as a team member
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced global and multi-cultural vegetable seed company
  • Decision making and problem solving skills. Capability to take action in solving problems while exhibiting judgment and a realistic understanding of issues
  • Challenge the status quo to improve processes and the way things are done
