Extension Associate - Bioenergy Crops

Location: Florence, South Carolina, USA

Full/Part Time: Full-Time
Regular/Temporary: Regular

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

1. JOB PURPOSE
The Extension Associate is responsible for working cooperatively with other county and state staff to plan, execute and evaluate Extension educational programs in the area of new and bioenergy cropping systems (working closely with the breeders and geneticists of the Advanced Plant Technology Program).  The area of focus for this program will include providing expertise and leadership in educational programming for adults with a primary agronomic crop emphasis focused on new and bioenergy crops. The incumbent will develop and conduct educational programs and field demonstrations for commercial row crop producers.  He/she will provide technical support/assistance to commercial row crop producers in the primary areas of varietal/hybrid selection, production, and pest management. This includes an emphasis on local food, feed, chemical, and energy systems and sustainable farming practices.  The incumbent will serve as a resource person for county offices and provide assistance by providing resources and materials for new row crops programs in the state. The performance of the assigned responsibilities is governed by the philosophy, policies, and procedures of the Clemson University Cooperative Extension Service.  

2. JOB FUNCTIONS

PRODUCER PROGRAMS
Educate, through direct and indirect methods, new and bioenergy crop producers who use conventional production techniques, and cooperate with state Extension specialists on technology transfer and outreach programs.  E/35%

PEST & PLANT PROBLEMS
Assist new and bioenergy crop growers with identification of pests and plant problems and selection of appropriate pest control measures.  E/25%

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING
Responsible for working with state Extension Specialists, local/regional Extension Agents,  and other regional food, feed, chemical, and bioenergy system development stakeholders to design and implement high quality marketing education programs for growers.  E/20%

ALLIANCES
Responsible for building and maintaining strong alliances with regional food, feed, chemical, and bioenergy system development stakeholders.  E/10%

COLLABORATION
Responsible for collaborating with Extension colleagues and other stakeholders to help identify and exploit opportunities to link growers with market opportunities, to help them plan production based upon indications of market demand, and to introduce them with new production opportunities for new and bioenergy crops that hold high potential for profitability.  E/5%

OTHER
Work with staff and University personnel to meet the Mission of the Clemson University Extension Service.  Responsible for Civil Rights, Affirmative Action, EEO and other reporting procedures in designated area of responsibility.  E/5%

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Agronomy, Plant Sciences or Plant Breeding is required.

Preferred in addition to minimum requirements:

  • Preferred: Master's Degree in Agronomy, Plant Sciences or Plant Breeding with extensive experience in row crop production. Educational emphasis in one or more of the following areas: best management practices, IPM.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required.
  • Ability to provide expertise and leadership in educational programming for adults
  • Ability to develop and conduct educational programs
  • Must have ability to effectively communicate with varied audiences.
  • Ability to effectively work within team setting.

Guidelines and Supervision:

  • Must have ability to work well independently and ability to organize daily tasks with limited supervision.

PAY & WORK SCHEDULE:

Standard Hrs: 37.5; Salary commensurate with education and experience.
