Research Assistant, Marker Assisted Breeding, Pepper

Location: Nunhem, The Netherlands

In the division Research & Development the Marker Assisted Breeding team works on the development and application of Molecular Markers in order to support the Bayer Crop Science vegetable breeding programs. For the Marker Assisted Breeding pepper team we are looking for ambitious candidates for the fulltime position of: Research Assistant Marker Assisted Breeding Pepper (FT)

You will be based in the Netherlands (location Haelen).

Your mission as Research Assistant MAB Pepper:

As a Research Assistant Marker Assisted Breeding you will contribute to multidisciplinary projects by Molecular Marker Research in direct cooperation with Breeding, Phytopathology, Bioinformatics and Nunhems Biotech Services worldwide. You will support breeders by carrying out marker assisted crossing programs, perform mapping studies in collaboration with the pre-breeder, and screen our breeding materials with newly developed markers.

Your tasks & responsibilities:

  • Analysis of large data sets generated with the latest molecular marker and sequencing technologies;
  • Conclusions and results from your work will be directly applied to the improvement of existing and new vegetable varieties and shortening their time to market;
  • Initiate, plan, design, and execute marker development and marker application projects;
  • Perform plant tissue sample collection and interact with Nunhems Biotech Services lab for nucleic acid isolation and genotyping;
  • Data analysis and interpretation for the development of new molecular markers and genetic linkage maps.
  • Perform quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping;
  • Facilitate marker-assisted selections;
  • Supervision and management of interns;
  • Oversee shipping and/or transfer of information and sample material between domestic and international collaborators.

You are a professional with:

  • Bachelor or master degree in Molecular Biology, Plant or Animal Breeding, Biotechnology, Genetics or related field.
  • Preferably 1-2 years of work experience in an R&D environment
  • Good knowledge of modern DNA technologies (Must)
  • Practical knowledge and experience in data management and molecular software tools (Excel, Access, R or equivalent statistical software). (Must)
  • Fluent in English & Dutch, both verbally and in writing.
