California - Nunhems employees and customers run to raise money for hunger

Salinas, California, USA
August 7, 2012

Nunhems, the vegetable seed business of Bayer CropScience, teamed up on Saturday with internal employees and representatives from Germains Seed Technology, Gowan Seed Company, Keithly-Williams and T&C for this year’s Salinas Valley Half Marathon to raise money for Ag Against Hunger, a non-profit agency that connects the agricultural community with food assistance programs.

“This is a perfect way to involve our employees and customers in a healthy activity for a good cause,” Russ Kabaker, Nunhems’ Lettuce Crop Sales Manager Americas, said.

Nunhems pledged a donation of $1,100 to Ag Against Hunger – $100 each in the names of the 11 employees and customers that participated – and covered the registration fees of its team members. All of the runners donned grey-and-green shirts featuring the slogan “Lettuce Run Together.”

The donation will generate more than 27,000 pounds of produce for those in need, according to Ag Against Hunger. Per the organization’s Web site, “On the Central Coast of California, more fruits and vegetables are grown, packed and shipped than in any other region in the world. Yet, in the midst of this abundance there are many who are hungry. Ag Against Hunger was founded to provide people in need with nutritious, fresh, surplus produce from local fields.” More information is available at www.agagainsthunger.org.

This year marks the third annual staging of the 13.1-mile Salinas Valley Half Marathon, an event that draws annual participation from 1,600 runners.

“I’m really proud of the dedication of each of the ‘Lettuce Run Together’ team members,” Kabaker said. “We had so much fun we’re already planning on doing it next year. It was great to connect with both our customers and the Salinas community while helping out a selfless local non-profit.”
