MNagro presents at the 5th Brazilian Fresh Market Tomato Seminar

Brazil
April 12, 2014

Marcio Nascimento was recently invited to make a presentation on the 5th Brazilian Fresh Market Tomato Seminar. He presented some data from the project that MNagro, his consulting company, collected for ABCSEM, the association focused on vegetable seeds and plant raisers.

The project was based on info covering the year 2012 and on it, Marcio showed the total tomato fresh market production was about 3 million tons in about 43,000 has.

This production volume had a value of approximately USD1,5 billion at growers level going to the double at wholesale market and reaching 3 times more(USD4,5MM) at consumers level.
The estimate costs indicates labor is the top item on fresh market tomato production followed by fertilizer and packing materials. Labor had also the top cost increased compared with the same info prepared for 2010.

Seed market value for such planted area was about USD55 million , using price at growers level.

Splitting by segment type the round, LSF with Ty or non Ty and staked has around 50% of fruit volume produced, followed by saladete & Italian type (stake and determinate) around 33%. Third type is the local type called Santa Cruz usually indeterminate with about 13% while the specialties’ (sherry, grape, sweet, etc) reach only about 1% of fruit produced.

When we look at the fruit value at growers level do not seed big changes, unless for the specialities where the value goes to about 5%.

Seminar is carried annually and cover several other items like, protected crop cultivation in tomato (almost nothing in Brazil), grafting process in tomato, potential damage of Helicoverpa armigera for tomatoes, trends for commercialization, etc.

Participants are growers and agronomists from private companies linked with tomato crop business as well as research people from public entities.
