Growing interest for organic food in Danish public kitchens

Denmark
July 30, 2014

Danish Food Minister Dan Jørgensen aims at improving eating habits among Danes in a more healthy and sustainable way in both public kitchens and in domestic households.

Danish Food Minister Dan Jørgensen's ambition is to improve eating habits among Danes.

Dan Jørgensen wants Danes to be more aware of healthy and sustainable food. Meals served in public canteens and institutions such as hospitals, kindergartens and elderly care facilities should, of course, lead the way.

“Our public kitchens and canteens must be front runners when it comes to serving healthy and sustainable meals,” says Dan Jørgensen. “As part of this plan it is my ambition to increase the amount of organic food used in public institutions. More organic food in public kitchens is also expected to have positive effects on food waste. Experience from two Danish cities that changed from conventional to organic food in their public institutions shows significant food waste reductions.”

In order to support the transition from conventional to organic food in public kitchens and canteens the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries has reserved DKK 28 million (3.5 million Euros). The initiative is receiving a lot of attention and the Ministry has received applications for a total of DKK 39 million.

“I am very pleased to see such great interest in having canteens serving organic food,” states the Danish Food Minister. “We already have organic projects in 24 municipalities, and the number of new applications state that many Danes want organic meals.”
