After a record crop in Canada last year, the U.S. is following up with a record canola crop of its own this time around.
According to a USDA crop production report released today, the 2014 American canola crop will amount to 1.14 million tonnes, up 14% from a year earlier and a potential new high.
Much of the credit for this year’s expected larger U.S. crop goes to a bigger seeded and harvested area. U.S. canola planted area, at 1.71 million acres, is up 27% from last year, while harvested area is up 23% at 1.55 million acres. The October yield forecast, at 1,622 lbs/acre (32.4 bu/acre), is 126 pounds below last year’s yield but will be the fourth highest on record, if realized.
The yield in North Dakota, the largest canola-producing state, is forecast at 1,800 lbs/acre (35.9 bu/acre), down 20 pounds from last year’s yield. Planted area in North Dakota is estimated at 1.18 million acres, an increase of 29% from 2013.
This year’s Canadian canola crop is estimated at 14.07 million tonnes, 21.6% below the record 2013 crop of nearly 18 million tonnes.
