Auf der Grundlage einer Erhebung in den Landesförderverbänden für Braugerste in Deutschland hat die Braugersten-Gemeinschaft e.V. ein erstes Bild über den Anbau von Sommergerste und den aktuellen Saatenstand zusammengestellt. Nachdem noch keine offiziellen Meldungen für die Anbauflächen vorliegen, sind die Flächenangaben Expertenschätzungen, die sich auf den Saatguteinsatz und Vor-Ort-Erhebungen stützen.
Der Winter 2014/2015 fiel gegenüber dem langjährigen Mittel von 1961 – 1990 durchschnittlich um 1,6 °C zu warm aus. Im Niederschlagsverhalten zeigte sich mit 181 l/qm kaum eine Abweichung gegenüber dem Soll von 183 l/qm im langjährigen Durchschnitt. Erst Ende Dezember fiel der erste Schnee, so dass während der wenigen Frosttage die Winterungen durch die Schneeauflage auch gut über den Winter kamen. Auswinterungsschäden wurden aus keiner Anbauregion gemeldet. Freundliche Märztage ließen die Oberböden schnell abtrocknen, so dass, trotz fehlender Frostgare, die Aussaat bei guter bis sehr guter Bodenstruktur unter optimalen Bedingungen ausgebracht werden konnte. Deutschlandweit wird mit dem Abschluss der Aussaat zum Osterfest (Anfang April) gerechnet.
Die Landesbraugerstenverbände prognostizieren eine Sommergerstenanbaufläche, die der des Vorjahres entspricht. Gute Marktchancen für Braugerste im Vergleich zu anderen Marktfrüchten geben dem Braugerstenanbau positive Impulse, so dass eher mit einem leichten Flächenplus gerechnet wird. Insgesamt ergeben sich für Deutschland somit ca. 347.000 ha Gesamtanbaufläche.
Für ein gleichmäßiges Auflaufen der Aussaat wären ab Anfang April wärmere Temperaturen sowie Niederschläge notwendig. Die Böden sind durch häufige Nachtfröste noch sehr kalt und in der Osthälfte Deutschlands herrscht ein Niederschlagsdefizit.
Das Sortenspektrum wird von den im Berliner Programm zur Verarbeitung empfohlenen Sorten Grace, Propino, Catamaran und Quench dominiert. Die neue, zur Verarbeitung empfohlene Sorte Avalon hat insbesondere in Baden-Württemberg und in Rheinland-Pfalz bereits im Anbaujahr 2015 zunehmende Bedeutung.
Der nächste Saatenstandsbericht der Braugersten-Gemeinschaft e.V. erscheint witterungsbedingt ca. Ende April 2015.
Crop report no. 1 - German 2015 spring barley
This is the first report by the Braugersten-Gemeinschaft e.V. (German Malting Barley Association) covering German 2015 spring barley plantings. The report provides an early picture of the harvest results that may be expected later in the year. There are no definite, official acreage data available yet. Therefore, all quantities presented here are based on preliminary estimates compiled by local experts. They are summary assessments of spring barley acreages presently under cultivation.
In 2014/2015, winter temperatures were about 1.6 °C higher than the long-term average established between 1961—1990. However, precipitation values of 181 l/m2 were very close to the long-term normal of 183 l/m2. The first snows of the season fell near the end of December, creating enough snow cover to provide sufficient protection from frost damage during the few days of sub-freezing temperatures. Indeed, none of the key German barley-growing regions report any winter damage for the current crop cycle. Mild weather in March allowed the top soils in most regions to dry out well. This resulted in ideal soil structures, in spite of a lack of frost in the ground. As a result, plantings in all regions got off to a good start. Overall, planting in Germany is expected to be completed around Easter (in early April this year).
The Barley Associations of the various German States report roughly similar barley acreages under cultivation in 2015 as in the previous crop year. If anything, current positive market incentives for brewing-quality barley make it more likely for final acreages, once accurately tallied, to increase rather than decrease compared to last year. The best estimates available at the moment suggest that the total German acreage for spring barley for all uses will be around 347,000 ha.
Looking into the immediate future, farmers are hoping for warmer temperatures and more precipitation in early April to ensure a smooth and even initial crop development. Because of frequent periods of ground frost overnight, the soil temperatures in many regions are still rather low. In addition, especially in the eastern half of Germany, there is still a precipitation deficit.
For the most part, the barley varieties under cultivation in 2015 follow the recommendations of the Berlin Program. The dominant varieties are Grace, Propino, Catamaran, and Quench. In addition, the newly recommended variety Avalon is gaining in importance in 2015, especially in the States of Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate.
The Braugersten-Gemeinschaft e.V. will issue its next spring barley crop report in late April. The precise timing of that report will depend on the weather.
