Braugersten-Gemeinschaft e.V. - 2. Erntebericht für Deutschland, Stand: 1.10.2015
2nd Crop Report Germany

Ladies and Gentlemen.

This second malting barley crop report by the Braugersten-Gemeinschaft e.V. (German Malting Barley Association) is based on sample evaluations of spring barley crop patterns derived from the 2015 harvest. The sampling was conducted by the various Agriculture Institutes and Chambers of Agriculture in the German states. While the first Malting Barley Harvest Report, published in August of this year, relied largely on expert forecasts of expected harvest quantities and qualities, this report relies on averages calculated from the analyses of actual harvest results.

In 2015, the spring barley acreage under cultivation increased by roughly 20,000 ha (5.8%) to 365,000 ha, compared to 2014. Contrary to pessimistic expectations after the lack of precipitation and a colossal heat wave with temperatures above 36°C throughout much of the growing season, the actual harvest results are, perhaps surprisingly, above average and quite satisfactory. Though the amount of moisture available to the plants was usually borderline and varied greatly from one region to another, it generally tended to be sufficient for healthy tillering and kernel development prior to final maturation. Prevailing summer temperatures especially in July allowed for a wide harvest window, and farmers were able to bring in the harvest in a dry and healthy state.

This year’s average yield per ha was 5.48 metric tons (MT), which is unusually high considering the weather-related difficulties that this crop faced. Therefore, the aggregate yield of German two-row spring barley amounts to some 1.9 million MT. Compared to the record-breaking harvest of 2.1 million MT in 2014, the increased acreage in 2015 compensated for some of the reduction in this year’s yield per hectare. Average protein values, however, varied substantially by region, resulting in a calculated average protein value of 10.6%. The greatest surprise of this year’s harvest is the high plumpness value of the crop, which is pegged at 91.7%. The combination of favorable protein and plumpness values, therefore, ensures an ample supply of healthy brewing-quality spring barley of roughly 1.35 million MT from the 2015 harvest.

The key barley varieties planted in Germany in 2015 were Propino, Grace, Quench, Catamaran, and Avalon. The final 2015 brewing barley harvest report for Germany will probably be available in November.
