USDA/PVPO grants protection to 19 new plant varieties

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued certificates of protection to developers of 19 varieties of seed-reproduced and tuber-propagated plants. They include chickpea, bean, oat, pea, ryegrass, triticale and wheat.
The certificates are being issued under the Plant Variety Protection Act. The certificates require that the varieties be new, distinct, uniform and stable. The owners will have the exclusive right to reproduce, sell, import and export their products in the United States for the duration of protection.
The 19 certificates are:
- the San Joaquin and Sutter varieties of chickpea, developed by Bean Cooperatives in Common, Tracy, Calif.;
- the Galveston variety of garden bean, developed by Syngenta Seeds, Inc., Nampa, Idaho;
- the TAMO 405* variety of oat, developed by Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, College Station, Texas;
- the Horizon 270 variety of oat, developed by Board of Supervisors of Louisiana State University and A&M College; and Florida Agricultural Experiment Station, Baton Rouge, La.;
- the XP 08240773 variety of pea, developed by Seminis Vegetable Seeds, Inc., Oxnard, Calif.;
- the Korando* variety of pea, developed by Nickerson International Research SNC, Chappes, France;
- the Quickstart II variety of perennial ryegrass, developed by Pure-Seed Testing, Inc., Hubbard, Ore.;
- the Pacheco variety of triticale, developed by Dr. Peter Franck, Schwaebisch Hall, Germany;
- the Armour and Hitch varieties of common wheat, developed by WestBred LLC, Haven, Kan.;
- the Camelot* variety of common wheat, developed by Board of Regents, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, Neb.;
- the Bitterroot* variety of common wheat, developed by Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station, University of Idaho, Moscow, Idaho;
- the Xerpha and Farnum varieties of common wheat, developed by Washington State University Research Foundation, Pullman, Wash.;
- the Albany* variety of common wheat, developed by Trigen Seed LLC, Bloomington, Minn.;
- the TAM 203* variety of common wheat, developed by Texas AgriLife Research, College Station, Texas;
- the Goetze variety of common wheat, developed by State of Oregon, by and through the State Board of Higher Education on behalf of Oregon State University, Corvallis, Ore.; and
- the Sunburst* variety of common wheat, developed by Sunbeam Extract Co. LLC, Croton, Ohio.
* In the United States, seed of this variety shall be sold by variety name only as a class of certified seed, and shall conform to the number of generations specified by the owner of the rights (84 STAT. 1542, as amended, 7 U.S.C. 2321 ET SEQ).
USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service administers the Plant Variety Protection Act, which provides time-limited marketing protection to developers of new and distinct seed-reproduced and tuber-propagated plants ranging from farm crops to flowers.
