USDA/PVPO grants protection to 24 new plant varieties

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued certificates of protection to developers of 24 varieties of seed-reproduced and tuber-propagated plants. They include cotton, bentgrass, bluegrass, fescue, lettuce, onion and potato.

The certificates are being issued under the Plant Variety Protection Act. The certificates require that the varieties be new, distinct, uniform and stable. The owners will have the exclusive right to reproduce, sell, import and export their products in the United States for the duration of protection.

The 24 certificates are:

  • the CT 310 HQ and HQ211CT varieties of cotton, developed by Seed Source, Inc., Advance, N.C.;
  • the DP 167 RF, DP 164 B2RF and DP 147 RF varieties of cotton, developed by D&PL Technology Holding Company, LLC, Scott, Miss.;
  • the Shark variety of creeping bentgrass, developed by Novel AG, Inc. , St. Paul, OR , & Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, N.J.;
  • the CY-2 variety of creeping bentgrass, developed by CHIBA PREFECTURE AND SNOW BRAND SEED CO., LTD, Chiba, Japan;
  • the Authority variety of creeping bentgrass, developed by Novel AG, Inc., St. Paul, Ore.;
  • the Benchmark DSR variety of creeping bentgrass, developed by Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, N.J.;
  • the SR 1150 and Tyee varieties of creeping bentgrass, developed by Seed Research of Oregon, Corvallis, OR, and Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, N.J.;
  • the Glenmont variety of Kentucky bluegrass, developed by Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, N.J.;
  • the Moonshine variety of Kentucky bluegrass, developed by Pure-Seed Testing, Inc., Hubbard, Ore.;
  • the Firenza variety of tall fescue, developed by Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, N.J.;
  • the Cadet and Blue Sapphire varieties of Kentucky bluegrass, developed by Novel AG, Inc., St. Paul, Ore.;
  • the Victory variety of lettuce, developed by Progeny Advanced Genetics, Inc., Salinas, Calif.;
  • the Truckee variety of lettuce, developed by Enza Zaden Beheer B.V., Enkhuizen, The Netherlands;
  • the Bandita variety of lettuce, developed by Syngenta Seeds, Inc., Boise, Idaho;
  • the Musena variety of lettuce, developed by Syngenta Seeds, Inc., Nampa, Idaho;
  • the Scottsdale variety of lettuce, developed by Orsetti Seed Company, Inc., Hollister, Calif.;
  • the NuMex Radiance* and NuMex Mirage* varieties of onion, developed by New Mexico Agricultural Experiment Station, Las Cruces, N.M.; and
  • the PRINCESS variety of potato, developed by Saka Pflanzenzucht GbR, Hamburg, Federal Republic of Germany.

* In the United States, seed of this variety shall be sold by variety name only as a class of certified seed, and shall conform to the number of generations specified by the owner of the rights (84 STAT. 1542, as amended, 7 U.S.C. 2321 ET SEQ).

USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service administers the Plant Variety Protection Act, which provides time-limited marketing protection to developers of new and distinct seed-reproduced and tuber-propagated plants ranging from farm crops to flowers.
