Monsanto’s Vegetable Seeds Division in Australia and New Zealand has a refreshed focus on the vegetable seed business

Australia
August 19, 2010

In 2010 Monsanto’s Vegetable Seeds Division in Australia and New Zealand has undergone some significant change, with the bringing together of two of the world’s leading seed brands to deliver a stronger portfolio of products for local growers. Our products are now marketed through two key brands: Seminis, for open field varieties such as broccoli, onion, spinach, beans & melons; and De Ruiter Seeds, for protected-culture varieties of tomato, capsicum and cucumber. The combination of strengths from these brands will lead to a portfolio of vegetables with better quality and better flavor, more resistance to diseases and higher productivity in the greenhouse and the field.

“We develop products that offer new and exciting choices for consumers. We are confident that delivering vegetable varieties with this winning combination of grower and consumer benefits will continue to drive demand for the Seminis & De Ruiter brands” said Peter O’Keeffe, head of Monsanto ANZ.

A new structure across Australia and New Zealand will refresh Monsanto’s approach to the vegetable seeds market, while maintaining the expertise and focus that has made the De Ruiter and Seminis brands such a strong piece of the vegetable seed landscape.

Key appointments focussed on better serving our customers in ANZ include:

  • Peter O’Keeffe, ANZ Lead, now oversees the entire Monsanto seeds & traits business, including cotton, canola and vegetables. Peter has over 20 years experience in the agricultural sphere, including various sales and leadership roles over a 12 year period at Nufarm Australia.
  • Daniel Kruithoff has shifted to the vegetable division after successfully leading Monsanto’s strategic marketing efforts across cotton & canola. Daniel is now the National Sales Lead for the vegetable division in ANZ.
  • Troy Mulcahy will continue to lead Technology Development (TD) for the Monsanto vegetable seeds division. Troy has been involved with the vegetable industry for over 9 years, including various sales and TD roles with Seminis over the past 5 years.
  • Aart Slobbe, Business Development Manager, will be moving to Australia in January. Aart started his career in the Netherlands where he developed a strong understanding of the world’s leading protected culture production systems.
  • Rachel Palumbo has assumed the role of Marketing & Licensing Lead. In this position Rachel will lead the development our seeds & traits marketing strategies & communications, including cotton, canola and vegetables.

These new appointments will further strengthen the Monsanto ANZ Vegetable Seeds Division to benefit from our 60 vegetable breeding stations around the globe.

“Monsanto has developed many powerful plant-breeding tools in its extensive work with the world’s major rowcrops – corn, cotton and oilseeds. These tools are now being applied in the vegetable seeds business, leading to exciting outcomes for the key vegetable crops in the ANZ market, including tomatoes, capsicums and melons,” said O’Keeffe.
