Dr. Will McCarty sssists the PhytoGen cottonseed team in Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi

Indianapolis, Indiana, USA
August 25, 2010

PhytoGen announces it has retained Dr. Will McCarty as an independent consultant to assist cotton producers in Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi. McCarty, who is both nationally and internationally recognized for his contributions to the cotton industry, will now provide his agronomic expertise to even more cotton growers throughout the Midsouth.

“The reputation of PhytoGen in the Midsouth is very good,” McCarty says. “PhytoGen has given cotton producers a choice and has developed a very good reputation in a short period of time.”

McCarty will help growers maximize profitability potential by recommending the most appropriate PhytoGen varieties, taking into consideration factors such as geography, soil type and insect pressure. He also aims to increase cotton acreage throughout the Midsouth.

“Gathering the most up-to-date and factual information is extremely important to growers who are trying to survive and remain profitable,” McCarty says. “I’m going to try to get Midsouth producers interested in cotton again, and encourage them to put the very best varieties and technology to work on their farms."

“Cotton is a very important crop because it helps the local economy immensely,” he says. “Cotton requires a lot of infrastructure support, and as a result, it helps support the overall community. The cotton dollar spreads around the economy more than any other commodity that we grow.”

McCarty served as the associate director of the Mississippi State University Extension Service from 2003 to 2008. Prior to holding that position, McCarty was the Extension cotton specialist at Mississippi State University for more than 20 years. He has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Extension Cotton Specialist of the Year, Extension Educator of the Year and Extension Distinguished Service Award.

“Much of McCarty’s success can be attributed to his passion for the cotton industry,” says Duane Canfield, general manager and marketing specialist for PhytoGen. “We are excited for the opportunity to work with someone of his expertise. Dr. McCarty’s goals to better the cotton industry partner well with our own at PhytoGen.”

McCarty also is the owner and president of Bogue Management Inc. in Starkville, Miss. He will continue to operate Bogue Management while serving the PhytoGen team.
