Western Australia Department of Agriculture takes its fight against exotic grain pests online

Western Australia
August 31, 2012

The Department of Agriculture and Food has taken its fight against exotic grain pests online.

The online course ‘Emergency plant pests threats of grains’ was launched recently to offer staff accessible training and strengthen their knowledge of grain pests.

The course was developed by the department’s grains biosecurity officer Jeff Russell in collaboration with project officer Andrea Johnston.

“The online course gives participants an awareness of key pests which could threaten the industry and the importance of surveillance. It is a valuable resource tool staff can access time and again,” Mr Russell said.

“It also outlines and offers access to national and state emergency management programs and industry agreements currently in place to respond to an exotic plant pest.”

The online training has been made available to department officers working with grain growers, grower groups and grain storage providers.

The department has also launched an extensive surveillance program incorporating regional grain research projects.

“Throughout the year, officers from seven research-based projects will be involved in surveillance for specific grain pests that represent a threat to the profitability of the grains industry,” Mr Russell said.

Mr Russell is currently delivering surveillance workshops to the department’s regional staff and introducing them to the online training course.

With the success of the workshops and online training gaining momentum, the department is now looking to collaborate with industry to produce a similar course for stakeholders as they continue to promote awareness of emergency plant pests in Western Australia.
