Successful Rijk Zwaan Organic Days in the United Kingdom

De Lier, The Netherlands
September 27, 2012

On 24 and 25 september the RZ Organic Days in the UK took place for the second year. The high number of visitors, the better than expected weather and the excellent condition of the crops made it a very succesful event.

Just like last year, the Organic Days were organized together with distributor Tucker Seeds. As a result, a very broad assortment was on display. “The Rijk Zwaan lettuce assortment again was regarded as one of the highlights”, says Rijk Zwaan crop specialist organic Andrew Henderson. “But also our carrots and brassicas drew a lot of attention. A special trial with an outdoor demo of tomatoes was undertaken. It was remarkable how well they grew!”

Good condition

Over the two days, the event was visited by around 260 people, mainly growers from the UK. They saw the crops in a very good condition, especially considering the difficult weather conditions of the past few months. “Pest problems also were very limited”, says Henderson. “There were many slugs, but no signs of aphids or caterpillars.”

An extra service this year were the trade stands provided by a number of companies involved with supplying the trial site. There were, for example, demonstrations of a harvesting machine and companies that sell organic compost or mulch materials. This initiative was suggested by last year’s visitors and was well appreciated this year. “It all contributed to a great event”, says Henderson.
