Harris Moran Seed Company’s Annual Pumpkin Patch opens to local School Children during the month of October to provide Fall Pumpkins & AG literacy

Modesto, California, USA
October 2, 2012

Harris Moran Seed Company’s Pumpkin Ag Literacy program commenced today with visits from local area K-1, and Special Ed students. These students will have the opportunity to visit our local Modesto facility during the month of October to pick a pumpkin right out of our local field, and receive education pertaining to Ag literacy, what we call "The Life Cycle of a Pumpkin Seed”.

The pumpkin patch program idea was conceived ten years ago and has been operational ever since. The program gives children a hands-on agricultural experience, one that they might not otherwise have. Our employees discuss "The Life Cycle of a Pumpkin Seed” which shows the children the various stages of a pumpkins growth & development: from seed to final product. After this short presentation they are allowed into the pumpkin patch to find that perfect pumpkin to take home to their families. This program has been a wonderful fall field trip for local schools, and has allowed these children to see that Pumpkins do not just come from a grocery store, but they are grown in fields, come in all shapes and sizes, and are grown from seeds, just like other plants.

Due to the popularity of this program, local area teachers sign up as far in advance as early Spring each year to ensure they will have the opportunity to return the following year. This year Harris Moran Seed Company will host more than 23 schools, and approximately 2,100 students from surrounding cities and towns such as Ceres, Modesto, Empire, Hughson, Riverbank, Hickman & Waterford. The program will run a total of four weeks and will conclude on Friday October 26th.

To make reservations for your K-1, or Special Ed classes for 2013, please contact Sherry Horton at 209-549-5281.
