Australia - GRDC's Dalby update focuses on nitrogen and protein

Australia
January 30, 2013

Unexpected and disastrous protein results in many areas where it’s never been a problem before are one of the focus topics of this year’s Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) Update in Dalby.

Being held 7 March at the Dalby RSL, the program includes a session on whether the outlier results are a question of economics, timing or the decision making process, with discussion being led by Chris Dowling from the Back Paddock Company.

Another session will outline the cutting edge of spray application research and practice in the United States and Australia, with Greg Kruger from the University of Nebraska and Bill Gordon from Bill Gordon Consulting.

GRDC northern panel chairman James Clark said the Updates provide a forum to discuss the latest research on key issues that will affect cropping profitability in the coming season as well as looking at the longer term issues faced by our industry.

“Practical new information on crop disease management, nutrition and agronomy that growers can start using now are what the Updates are all about.

“They’re a chance for growers and advisers to tap into the latest research, liaise with our expert local and international guest speakers and become better informed on ways to boost productivity on farm in a more sustainable manner.”

The Dalby program also includes:

  • Nutritional interactions with N, P, K and S on the Darling Downs
  • Nematodes and varietal choice
  • Chickpeas in 2013 - varietal performance, pests and diseases, time of sowing trials, salinity effects
  • Impact of tillage on production and profit in long term no-till
  • Challenges and opportunities on the Darling Downs - living alongside coal seam gas
