Australia - New grains products, varieties and practices on the way

Australia
February 21, 2013

Growers in southern New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania will be among the beneficiaries of a suite of new products, crop varieties and farm practices set to emerge from the grains industry’s research, development and extension (RD&E) pipeline.

Current investments by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), on behalf of growers and the Australian Government, are expected to produce an array of tools, resources and support mechanisms to enhance growers’ productivity and profitability.

GRDC Southern Regional Panel chair, David Shannon, says many of the projects in the RD&E pipeline are outlined in the GRDC’s recently-published 2011-12 Growers’ Report.

“This report provides growers with a snapshot of industry RD&E investment priorities and the progress and achievements resulting from GRDC-funded projects which are addressing these issues,” Mr Shannon said.

The report highlights numerous investments that are expected to deliver results to southern cropping region growers in the near future, including:

  • The release of the first oat variety combining milling quality with resistance/tolerance to cereal cyst nematode;
  • The development and commercialisation of a new control for diamondback moth, which can be a serious pest in southern canola crops;
  • Further development of an infra-red soil probe for rapid measurement of soil moisture and soil nutrients;
  • New investments to scope potential technologies and approaches to more cost-effectively manage snails and slugs, based on increased understanding of their distribution and more effective biological, cultural and chemical control options;
  • A collaborative program on post-harvest grain storage that will develop an industry-wide systems approach, integrating a range of tools and treatments, for managing stored-grain insect pests at all critical points in the Australian grains supply chain.

More information about GRDC investments in RD&E activities is contained in the Growers’ Report 2011-12, which is available for viewing and downloading via www.grdc.com.au/Growers-Report.

The GRDC’s Annual Report 2011-12 also contains details about current investments. It is available via
