Dr Manuel Corpas joins a distinguished group of individuals including Professor Terri Attwood - with whom TGAC has collaborated - and Professor Christine Orengo who recently became a member of TGAC’s Scientific Advisory Board.
As Plant and Animal Genomes Project Leader at TGAC, Dr Manuel Corpas manages and participates in projects for the annotation and analysis of transcriptomes and epigenomes of various plant and animal species. He is also involved in the development of the BioJS project, a framework for representation of biological data in web applications using JavaScript.
As a member of the ISCB Board of Directors, Dr Manuel Corpas will be involved in a number of actions that are outlined in four objectives presented in his manifesto. These are: creating a structure within ISCB to represent “middle layer” members; active advocacy for students and scientists in developing countries - particularly in Africa; the creation of an Ambassador programme where recognised scientists talk about the benefits of becoming an ISCB member; and encouraging the public recognition of service to ISCB.
Dr Manuel Corpas has considerable experience of setting up networks, organisations and events at an international level including starting ISCB's Student Council, ISCB's Regional Student Groups, the series of Student Council Symposiums, the ISCB Africa ASBCB Conference and Itico.org, a not-for-profit company of which he is Director. He also has a strong presence on social media, which enables him to communicate with the wider scientific community.
“I am delighted to be part of ISCB’s Board of Directors,” said Dr Manuel Corpas. “ISCB is the Society I grew up with as a student and being on the Board of Directors provides me with a chance to give back the many benefits I have received since I joined 10 years ago. Belonging to this Society is not just another badge for me, this is a great opportunity to help develop senior bioinformaticians and junior group leaders, and enable them to improve as professionals. I am committed to working hard for the bioinformatics field through ISCB.”
The next ISCB Board of Directors meeting will be held in October and Dr Manuel Corpas will be a member for the next three years, starting in January 2014.
