The annual awards are presented for outstanding contributions to crop science through education, national and international service, and research.

The Crop Science Society of America (CSSA) announces the following 2013 awards to be formally presented at the CSSA Awards Ceremony on Nov. 6 during the scientific society’s Annual Meeting in Tampa, FL. The annual awards are presented for outstanding contributions to crop science through education, national and international service, and research.

• Hari D. Upadhyaya, ICRISAT - Frank N. Meyer Medal for Plant Genetic Resources: Hari D. Upadhyaya is a principal scientist and head of the genebank at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics, India and adjunct professor of agronomy, Kansas State University. His research focuses on assessing genetic diversity and gaps in collections and identifying germplasm lines for use by breeders.
• Rajeev K. Varshney, ICRISAT - Young Crop Scientist Award: Rajeev K. Varshney is a research programme director - grain legumes and director, Center of Excellence in Genomics at ICRISAT, Hyderabad, India. His research focuses on structural, functional, comparative, and translational genomics for improving the crop productivity of so- called "orphan" or "less-studied" crops in marginal environments in Africa and Asia.
• A. Susana Goggi, Iowa State University - Seed Science Award: Susana Goggi is an associate professor in the Department Agronomy and Seed Science Center at Iowa State University. She received a B.S. degree from Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Mississippi State University.
• Bir Bahadur Singh, G.B. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology - International Service in Crop Science Award: B.B. Singh is a visiting professor in the Soil and Crop Sciences Department and a senior fellow in the Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture at Texas A&M University. Before joining Texas A&M in 2007, he was the principal cowpea breeder at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture for 27 years.
• Roch Gaussoin, University of Nebraska-Lincoln - Crop Science Extension Education Award: Roch Gaussoin is Professor and Head of the Department of Agronomy & Horticulture at the University of Nebraska. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the New Mexico State University, and Ph.D. degree from Michigan State University.
• Hari D. Upadhyaya, ICRISAT - Crop Science Research Award: Hari D Upadhyaya is a Principal Scientist and Head Genebank at International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics, India and Adjunct Professor of Agronomy, Kansas State University. He received M. Sc. and Ph. D. degrees in Plant Breeding from GB Pant University of Agric. & Tech. Pantnagar, India.
• James P. Shroyer, Kansas State University - Crop Science Teaching Award: Jim Shroyer is a Professor and Extension Crops Specialist in the Department of Agronomy at Kansas State University. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Oklahoma State University and a Ph.D. degree from Iowa State University.
• James L. Brewbaker, University of Hawaii - CSSA Presidential Award: For more than 60 years, University of Hawaii at Manoa plant breeder Dr. James Brewbaker has developed new varieties of crops for improved nutrition, yields and pest and disease resistance. He helped establish Hawaii’s seed corn industry and promotes tropical legumes. He has a B.S. from the University of Colorado and Ph.D. from Cornell University and authored more than 280 publications. An ASA and CSSA fellow, he has received CSSA’s Crop Science Research, DeKab Distinguished Career and Seed Science awards, as well as and received the first National Association of Plant Breeders Lifetime Achievement Award.
• Charles W. Stuber, North Carolina State University - CSSA Presidential Award: Charles Stuber is professor of genetics and crop science (emeritus) and director, Center for Plant Breeding and Applied Plant Genomics, at North Carolina State University. Dr. Stuber is recognized for his pioneering research in the development of DNA marker-based selection technology used  all major plant breeding programs. He also served as president of CSSA and ASA.
• Samantha S. Shoaf, Oklahoma State University – ASA, CSSA, SSSA Congressional Science Fellow: Samantha Shoaf is an assistant professor in the Plant and Soil Sciences department at Oklahoma State University. She received a B.S. from the University of Florida and a Ph.D. from Purdue University. As the Congressional Science Fellow, she worked on agriculture and nutrition issues for Senator John Thune.
• April L. Ulery, New Mexico State University – ASA, CSSA, SSSA Mentoring Award: April Ulery is a professor of soil science in the Plant and Environmental Sciences Department at New Mexico State University where she teaches and conducts research in environmental soil chemistry. She received a B.S. degree in geology from University of Redlands and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in soil science from the University of California-Riverside.
