U.S. growers planting Pioneer brand sorghum hybrids win majority of national categories in National Sorghum Producers' Yield and Management Contest

Des Moines, Iowa, USA
December 19, 2013

Growers planting Pioneer® brand sorghum hybrids recently won four of seven first-place finishes and 12 of the 21 national categories in the 2013 National Sorghum Producers (NSP) Yield and Management Contest. Seven of these growers won national finishes with Pioneer sorghum hybrid 84G62.

First-, second- and third-place national honors were awarded in each of the seven segments. Growers compete within a broad range of sorghum production classes, including conventional-till irrigated, conventional-till non-irrigated, mulch-till non-irrigated, no-till non-irrigated, reduced-till irrigated, double-crop non-irrigated and double-crop irrigated.

In addition to national placings, growers planting sorghum hybrids from DuPont Pioneer captured 63% of all state category placements.

Ki Gamble of Edwards County, Kansas, won the 2013 Irrigated Bin Buster Award with Pioneer sorghum hybrid 84G62 at 215 bu/ac.

John W. Williams of White County, Illinois, won the Non-Irrigated Award with Pioneer sorghum hybrid 84G62 at 186.35 bu/ac.

NSP contest winners are awarded based on their ability to exceed established USDA yield averages for the county where the contest field is grown; the “bin-buster” awards are given to the actual highest yield gained in irrigated and non-irrigated categories.

The NSP Yield and Management Contest is an annual competition among sorghum producers with the goal of producing the highest yields.

“Once again, growers planting Pioneer sorghum hybrids have dominated the NSP yield contest this year,” said Doug Pilkington, Pioneer senior marketing manager, Lincoln, Neb. “The attentive management practices of these growers, along with strong performing products, led to their success. Having the majority of the top-yielding hybrids in this contest shows the advantages Pioneer products bring to the financial bottom line of sorghum producers.

“The success these growers have with Pioneer sorghum products is testament to the quality research program that delivers higher harvestable yields and defensive traits to protect those yields.”

State and national winners will be recognized at the NSP Yield and Management Contest Awards Dinner on Friday, February 28 during the 2014 Commodity Classic in San Antonio, Texas.

Details about individual winners can be found on the Pioneer website at http://www.pioneer.com/nsp/.
