Mississippi State University forage expert Rocky Lemus receives award for forage contributions

Mississippi State, Mississippi, USA
January 21, 2014

A Mississippi State University forage expert received an award for outstanding contributions to the field from the American Forage and Grassland Council during its recent national meeting.

Rocky Lemus was recognized with the merit award for superior contributions to forage and grassland agriculture at the 2014 annual conference Jan. 14 in Memphis. He has a joint appointment with the MSU Extension Service and the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station.

Members of the council represent the academic community, producers, private industry, institutes and foundations. They promote and develop the forage industry to produce quality forage and grasslands.

Each January, the Forage and Grassland Council hosts an annual conference to provide opportunities for public and industry forage workers to meet with each other and with producers to exchange ideas on production, utilization and promotion of forages.

Lemus received his master’s degree in agronomy from Iowa State University and a doctorate in crop and soil environmental sciences from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Before coming to MSU in 2007, he was an assistant professor in the Agricultural Sciences Department at Texas A&M-Commerce, where he was responsible for teaching, Extension and research.

The Forage and Grassland Council is an international organization made up of 20 affiliate councils in the United States and Canada with membership of about 2,500. Lemus has led the Mississippi Forage and Grassland Council, an active affiliate with more than 80 members, since it was formed seven years ago.
