Brazilian pitches are ready for this summer´s topevent

Denmark
May 13, 2014

Here, a few weeks before kick-off for the world´s biggest and most prestigious football finals in Brazil, there are still infrastructural challenges to be solved for the organisers. The preparations for making perfect pitches for the football players from the 32 best national teams in the World follows a carefully planned schedule, and the pitches are in good shape and will be fit for play. The pitch preparations include overseeding with a top performing Perennial ryegrass mixture from DLF-TRIFOLIUM.

Only just returned from a visit to some of the Brazilian stadiums and training centres, Export Manager Jan Gottlieb and General Manager Maximino Santiago Borsi from DLF-TRIFOLIUM are confident that the pitches will be ready for the World Cup matches in summer 2014.
-We have been working on this event for 3 years in close cooperation with grass specialists and the constructors responsible for the pitches, and we have no doubt that this World Cup will present top class grass pitches, says Jan Gottlieb.

Detailed training program for pitch managers

The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) has developed the guidelines and has coordinated the pitch preparation process for the stadiums hosting the tournament. A training seminar with more than 230 participants was carried out in mid-March to explain all the details in the final pitch preparation program.

Maristela Kuhn, agronomist and grass specialist, has advised the LOC and trained the pitch managers in the preparation program.

-The key challenge has been to define a homogeneous grass solution providing uniform and fair playing surfaces for the football teams, since there are significant differences in climate and geography at the Brazilian’s World Cup locations from north to south. To secure top quality pitches from kick-off and all the way up to the final on July 13 overseeding the World Cup pitches with a Perennial ryegrass mixture is an important part of the strategy and preparations, says Maristela Kuhn.

All pitches overseeded with perennial ryegrass

Most of the Brazilian football pitches are Bermuda grass based, but due to the winter dormancy of Bermuda grass, the pitches are reinforced with a special turf Perennial ryegrass to provide a perfect and uniform playing surface for all the matches during the tournament. The LOC has ensured that the special grass mixture from DLF is available at all locations hosting the football matches of the World Cup.

Starting in April the pitches are repeatedly overseeded with DLF’s top performing Turf Perennial ryegrass varieties including the new 4turf™, exclusively available from DLF’s plant breeding.

Grass ready for opening match in São Paolo 12 June

In the coming weeks a large amount of finishing is taking place around the venue at the Arena de São Paolo which is hosting the opening match between Brazil and Croatia. But the grass pitch is ready now, and this particular pitch has no Bermuda grass and consists entirely of the Perennial ryegrass solution from DLF.
