The deputy minister of agriculture, who also serves as the head of Agricultural Research, Education and Extension Organization (AREEO), Dr. Eskandar Zand announced that Iran will start the process to field test insect resistant rice and cotton. This announcement was made after meeting the Minister of Agriculture and senior managers of the ministry with President Rohani. Dr. Zand promised that "By the end of the year, 12 important achievements of the organization (AREEO) will be inaugurated". He outlined the initiation of three field trials of transgenic plants including rice and cotton in 2014.

The first insect resistant genetically modified rice plant in Iran was officially commercialized in 2004, coinciding with the international year of rice. Since then the commercial production of transgenic rice was limited due to some political oppositions. Now with the strong support from the new administration, extensive activities in support of biotech crops research and production have been restarted.

Irán inicia ensayos de campo con arroz y algodón modificado genéticamente

El viceministro de Agricultura iraní, quien también actúa como jefe de Investigación Agraria, Educación y Organización de Extensión (AREEO), Eskandar Zand, ha anunciado que Irán dará comienzo al proceso de pruebas de campo con arroz y algodón modificado genéticamente resistentes a insectos. El mandatario anunció que este año se se darían comienzo en total a tres ensayos de campo con estas variedades biotecnológicas.
El anuncio se realizó después de la reunión entre el Ministro de Agricultura con el Presidente Rohani. Eskandar Zand afirmó que “para fines de este año, la AREEO iniciará una serie de actividades, entre ellas, tres ensayos a campo con arroz y algodón transgénico”.

La primera planta de arroz modificado genéticamente resistente a insectos en Irán fue comercializado oficialmente en 2004, coincidiendo con el año internacional del arroz. Desde entonces la producción comercial de arroz modificado genéticamente ha sido limitado debido a determinadas oposiciones políticas. Ahora, con el fuerte apoyo de la nueva administración y las extensas acciones de apoyo por parte de la comunidad científica la producción de los cultivos biotecnológicos ha vuelto a ponerse sobre la mesa.

En junio de 2013 Irán inauguró el primer invernadero de variedades modificadas genéticamente en la ciudad de Keraj. Un complejo de 1.400 metros cuadrados con la última tecnología que se ha convertido en un referente de investigación en Irán y un medio clave para los científicos del país y sus investigaciones.
