The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) has approved a state Special Local Need (SLN) label for use of Reflex 2E herbicide for preemergence weed control in seeded peas, pumpkins and squash, and transplanted peppers and tomatoes. This is an indemnified label which is available on the Syngenta Crop Protection website at http://farmassist.com. Growers must register and agree to accept all liability for use of Reflex on these crops. After entering the website and registering, click on Products, the Indemnified Labels, then select state and crop.

Reflex is active against most broadleaves and annual grasses. It may be used at a rate of 0.125-0.25 pounds active ingredient per acre (0.5-1 pint per acre). One pint is the maximum amount per acre per year, and it may only be used once in two years. The pre-harvest interval (PHI) for peas is 46 days. The PHI for peppers is 60 days and for tomatoes is 70 days. For summer and winter squash, the PHI is 32 days.

Michigan State University Extension cautions growers that Reflex 2E needs to be used judiciously and carefully in these crops to avoid over application. It provides control of many difficult weeds and is another useful tool for vegetable growers.

Dr. Zandstra’s work is funded in part by MSU’s AgBioResearch.
