Elsoms Seeds demonstrates impressive new portfolio at Cereals 2014

United Kingdom
May 30, 2014

Lincolnshire based Independent plant breeder, Elsoms seeds, will be showcasing it’s rejuvenated Agricultural Division at Cereals 2014 leading with newly recommended, Trinity Oilseed Rape, a full range of Cereals and Catch Crops from Saaten Union, new varieties from the UK’s newest major plant breeding business, Elsoms Wheat Ltd, as well as a complete portfolio of Energy Crops.

.

“Elsoms is proud of its long and successful tradition of plant breeding for the UK Agricultural and Vegetable sectors,” said Bob Miles, Elsoms Agricultural Director. “Our Vegetable breeding programmes continue to be very strong and over the last 18 months we have successfully restructured our Agricultural Division to keep it at the heart of our business for years to come,” he added.

“The growth in our new Agricultural Business is based on a number of partnerships with breeders across Europe, allowing us to provide competitive varieties across a wide range of crop types and sectors,” said Elsoms Sales Manager, Adrian Hayler. “The success of this strategy is highlighted by the emergence of newly recommended Trinity Oilseed Rape which has been produced from our partnership with Florimond Desprez and SW Lantmannen,” added Adrian. Mark Nightingale, Elsoms OSR Breeder commented, “Trinity has attracted a lot of interest as it is an excellent all-round variety with a very high yield and, unlike a number of competing varieties, combines this with excellent all-round disease and agronomic characters and a consistent year on year high yield.

During 2013 Elsoms announced two major developments. Firstly, a wheat breeding business “Elsoms Wheat Ltd” was formed to develop varieties specifically for the UK market, in partnership with German breeder, Noordsat and French hybrid wheat breeding specialists, Saaten Union Recherché. Later in the year German plant breeding alliance, Saaten Union, announced that it had appointed Elsoms to be its UK marketing agent for all of its material in the UK, covering a wide range of Cereal and Catch Crops.

“Our new business is able to provide farmers and merchants with a real alternative to current suppliers,” said Bob Miles. “In the Energy Crop sector in particular we have seen a lot of interest in Hybrid Rye, Energy Beet and Maize which we are now able to offer,” commented Bob.

“With farmers and agronomists having to review future agronomy strategies, Catch Crops are increasingly being actively considered as a solution to maintaining and improving yields,” declared Adrian. “In northern Europe these crops have successfully been used to improve soil yield potential and we are now working with a number of growers to successfully transfer Saaten Union’s expertise in this sector into the UK” concluded Adrian.
