With spring beans already a top contender for spring cropping this year, new varieties now on the PGRO Recommended List will add a further boost.
“We believe our new varieties at the head of the PGRO Recommended List for spring beans are a step change in yields for growers,” says Theo Labuda, Managing Director of breeder LSPB (LS Plant Breeding). “The upward move in spring bean yields started some eight years ago when Fuego came on the scene, and it has rightly been the standard to beat since then.
“We now have Fanfare moving ahead by a substantial 7% over control giving a very worthwhile increase in gross output for growers at current prices.
“Fanfare is the highest yielding spring bean available for sowing this spring. It is early ripening with good standing ability and gives an excellent sample – important for the export market. In fact, it has already won an award as the best human consumption bean.”
Andy Bury, pulse trading manager at Frontier Agriculture sees Fanfare as a good variety for their export business to Egypt and beyond: “Our exports of human consumption beans are a successful and profitable market outlet for UK growers – indeed, this is what drives the UK human consumption bean market.”
There will be sufficient seed of Fanfare available to meet demand this spring and, with its even higher-yielding sister variety Vertigo becoming available for sowing in 2015, the two varieties should account to close on 50% of the market for next season – good news for UK growers and for UK exports.
