Australia - Bayer CropScience's breeding centre recognised by Australian Business Awards

Australia
July 30 ,2014

Bayer CropScience was this week selected as a winner for the Australian Business Awards in the Community Contribution category.

The annual Australian Business Awards recognises organisations that demonstrate the core values of business excellence, excellence of service, social and environmental contributions.

Tara Johnston, Australian Business Awards Program Director, said, “With a modernised economy we are experiencing notable change in business with new market and social needs expanding rapidly. The ABA100 Winners are reflective of a nation-wide commitment to innovation and improvement, with the award honouring their evident traction within their respective industries.”

Organisations are selected upon innovative business processes, product development, enterprise, service excellence, sustainability and community contribution.

Bayer was recognised in the Community Contribution category for the opening of their state-of-the-art wheat and oil seed breeding centre near Horsham, Victoria.

Rob Hall, General Manager of Bayer Seeds ANZ says the breeding centre has energised the local community by investing capital into the Wimmera region.

“We’d like to thank the Australian Business Awards for this recognition, which was only possible with the support we received from the Victorian State Government, Longerenong College, Workco Ltd, Wimmera Development Association and the Horsham Rural City Council,” Rob said.

“At Bayer we believe in science for a better life and these strong partnerships are enabling us to develop new technologies which will help farmers become even more efficient and sustainable in the future.”

The centre is the first of its kind in Australia and focuses on developing wheat and oilseeds varieties with higher yields and productivity improvements specifically for Australian agriculture.

“This state-of-the-art facility is an investment into the long term sustainability of the agricultural industry in Australia and in addition to cutting edge R&D will also provide young agricultural students with the opportunity to develop crucial skills working with the best technology and learning from our scientists,” Rob added.

When hiring is finalised the site will employ up to 20 permanent staff. The centre works closely with the college’s agricultural training programs with an expectation to yield results for Australian farmers within the decade.

John Goldsmith, General Manager of Longerenong College, says Bayer’s investment was attracting new students to careers in agriculture.

“The breeding centre has already established a whole new world of opportunities for the existing and future agricultural students of our college,” John said.

“We fully expect to see a continued increase in enrolments and have no doubt that the opportunity to participate in shared research with Bayer will continue to have a positive influence on the way young people view the agricultural industry.”
