Western Australia - Oats event to focus on building on industry opportunities

Western Australia
August 25, 2014

Growers and agribusiness can access the latest oats industry information at the Oat Grain and Hay Spring Forum and Field Walk at York on Thursday 4 September.

The forum, hosted by the Grain Industry Association of Western Australia (GIWA), will include updates from key oat industry participants, researchers, supply chain experts, processors and market analysts.

The spring forum and field walk will provide grower and seasonal updates to help plan future cropping strategies and will include a field visit to the national oat breeding field site at York.

“The day will offer attendees a chance to network with other growers, industry stakeholders and service providers,” GIWA Oat Council Chair Will Carrington-Jones said.

“Participants will also explore and identify where we, as an industry, should target efforts and investments to develop and maximise value in the industry in the next ten years.”

Department of Agriculture and Food Grains Director Robert Loughman said the forum had been developed to provide growers with access to key speakers and industry participants across the supply chain.

“Last year the Western Australian oat industry contributed more than $200 million to the State’s economy,” Dr Loughman said.

Key speakers include:

  • Mr Will Carrington-Jones, Oat Council Chair, will outline the Grains Industry Association of WA vision for the WA oat industry.
  • Dr Pamela Zwer, National Oat Breeder with the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI), will outline how the program meets industry need for export quality grain and hay oats.
  • Ms Roslyn Jettner, AEGIC, will outline findings of a recent oat market visit to China undertaken through the Australian Export Grain Innovation Centre with the support of the Grains Research and Development Corporation.
  • Representatives from oat grain and hay marketers and processors.
  • Raj Malik, Research Agronomist, Department of Agriculture and Food.

Participation is open to all and the event is free. The full event program is available at giwa.org.au/events Please RSVP to Shai Dunbar (sdunbar@giwa.org.au) or 08 6262 2128 for catering purposes (morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea provided).
