Enza Zaden's cherry tomato Tremolo successful in Japan

Enkhuizen, The Netherlands
August 22, 2014

From 3-5 September Enza Zaden will participate in the Asia Fruit Logistica. The Asia Fruit Logistica is for Enza Zaden an excellent platform to exchange ideas with the chain about the latest trends and discuss how we as a vegetable breeding company can provide chain solutions meeting these developments through our genetics.

The focus for this years participation is ‘taste’. “Today’s consumers want vegetables that are both healthy and tasty. Enza Zaden makes constant efforts to breed vegetable varieties that stand out from others in a positive way. Flavour is one of our key priorities”, explains Ruud Berkvens, Area Manager South East Asia at Enza Zaden.

Tremolo

Fumihiro Hashimoto shows the new cherry tomato Tremolo.

The new cherry tomato Tremolo is a great example of a variety that is developed for its taste. “Tremolo is developed specifically for the Japanese market”, Berkvens said. “Japanese people have different taste requirements from western people. This new cherry tomato meets these requirements. It has a great Japanese eating quality and taste and has a good resistance against virus (TYLCV). Besides that the tomato is very crispy.”

Fumihiro Hashimoto of BESTCROP Co. Ltd., distributor of Enza Zaden in Japan, is very enthusiastic about the new cherry tomato. “Cherry tomatoes are a quite new segment in Japan, but there is absolute market potential for. The total cherry tomato consumption in Japan is estimated at 115.000 tons/year in product. And this new variety Tremolo of Enza Zaden is becoming more popular.”
